VALESORAssessment of environmental stress factors - European Horizon Project

Project coordinated by the University of Angers, Professor Gildas Appéré (Granem), the consortium brings together 12 partners and aims to assess the health and economic consequences of various chemical stress factors, whether transmitted through the air, water or soil, and to develop a decision-making tool for those involved in public decision-making on chemicals.

Dementia, kidney disease, hypertension, asthma, chronic bronchitis, loss of fertility and cancer. The list of known health effects of air pollution and exposure to chemicals is long and growing. The European Horizon project VALESOR - Valuation of Environmental Stressors - will assign a monetary value to the health effects of pollution and provide an online tool to guide decision-makers towards the most effective measures to save lives and reduce costs. What is the (health) cost of pollution?

VALESOR seeks to make a major contribution to scientific and political efforts to take the economic values of environmental stressors into account in a more consistent manner in policy-making and planning. The environmental stressors of interest to VALESOR are chemical stressors such as chemicals and air pollutants transmitted by air, water and soil vectors. VALESOR will develop an innovative web-based tool enabling stakeholders to assess the health and economic consequences of projected changes in chemical stressors.

This web-based tool will be able to evolve, taking into account the fact that, at a given date, the assessment of exposure and impact of certain chemical stressors is still incomplete, thus providing a partial and provisional assessment based on credible assumptions.

VALESOR will also engage in significant awareness-raising activities to promote the consideration of environmental stressors in economic decision-making and to facilitate the establishment of transdisciplinary consistency in the values used in the assessment of environmental stressors.

VALESOR will first develop a state-of-the-art environmental economic model that will be as comprehensive as possible in theory in its representation of the economic values of pollution. VALESOR will increase the number of human health parameters taken into account in assessments of the economic well-being of chemical and atmospheric pollution, in line with recent results and ongoing projects.

Based on previous research and engagement with other programmes, VALESOR will clarify the input knowledge that is important before calculating the economic values associated with pollution. VALESOR will benefit from the experience and expertise of several of its partners who have already worked on models and/or tools targeting air pollution.

VALESOR will provide concrete advice on how key economic values of well-being should be used by policy makers.

Valesor is also pleased to be part of MeteorEU - a group of HorizonEU projects examining the health costs of pollution.
