Cultural Scenes, Atmospheres and Urban Transformations

Cultural and creative activities are at the heart of the profound changes that are currently affecting urban societies, their territories and their modes of development. These activities create doubt with regards to public policies as they are powerful vectors of innovation, resilience of industrial territories, specific environments, but also gentrification. Based on the concept of "cultural scenes", our project aims to analyse the complex interplay between a cultural and artistic offer located in the presence of start-ups or creative entrepreneurs, urban configurations; and the social organization of a territory. Beyond a theoretical and methodological reflection on the concept of "scene", we will analyse conditions of emergence, visibility and development of scenes and study their strategic issues, especially for urban governments. Four territories will be predominant: Nantes, Angers, Grenoble and Austin (Texas).
